FOTEP Movie Reviews

Across the Universe (2007)

This is the story of a British visitor to the US. He is looking for his father and falls in love. The movie features covers of many great Beatles songs that are done very well. I have this soundtrack.

Songs include:

  • All My Loving
  • I Want to Hold Your Hand
  • With A Little Help From My Friends
  • Let It Be
  • Strawberry Fields Forever
  • Revolution
  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  • Hey Jude
  • All You Need is Love
  • Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
IMDB Score: 7.4/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982)

Well, IMDB has a low score for this film, but Amazon has a high one. I'm going with Amazon on this one.

This movie is a love story, comedy and musical. Dolly Parton is the madam of a local house of ill-repute, Burt Reynolds is the sheriff, Jim Nabors is the deputy and Dom DeLuise is the muckraking television reporter.

Melvin P. Thorpe (DeLuise) finds out that the county has a whorehouse and plans an expose. The sheriff goes to the big city to try and talk Thorpe out of doing his report, he fails so Ed Earl (Reynolds) tells Miss Mona (Parton) to shut down for a while. But, the annual party after the Thanksgiving football game is scheduled and goes on as planned.

Thorpe raids the party, catching the football team and a local politician in flagrante delicto.

The music, except the love song (I Will Always Love You) aren't really hits, but make the movie fun.

IMDB Score: 5.8/10
Amazon Score: 4.6/5

Grease (1978)

Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) meet on summer vacation and have a short romance. When Sandy moves into town after summer and they end up at the same high school Danny is on the spot: How to maintain his cool reputation with his gang.

Now it's up to Sandy to romance Danny.

Here is another great soundtrack which includes:

  • Grease
  • Summer Nights
  • Hopelessly Devoted to You
  • Beauty School Dropout
  • Greased Lightnin'
  • Blue Moon
IMDB Score: 7.2/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

Heavy Metal (1981)

Loosely based on the magazine "Heavy Metal" this is a rock musical cartoon whose plot revolves around a glowing green orb and the destruction it brings to the lives of its owners.

Note that this is an adult movie and includes cartoon nudity.

Again I go with the Amazon high rating for this movie.

The soundtrack to this one is great also and includes:

  • Heavy Metal - Sammy Hagar
  • Working in the Coalmine - Devo
  • Heavy Metal (Take a Ride) - Don Felder
  • Open Arms - Journey
  • Veterans Of The Psychic Wars - Blue Oyster Cult
  • Reach Out - Cheap Trick
  • Radar Rider - Riggs
I had this soundtrack on vinyl and recently upgraded to CD.

IMDB Score: 6.7/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1967)

Holy cow! $43 for this old film? Even used it's $10. Buy it used, it really is a great show.

In the titular book, J Pierpont Finch finds the key to success in the business world. Once a lowly window washer in New York, "Ponty" uses the lessons to con and connive his way to the top.

The music isn't anything to write home about, it's the plot that is the draw for this movie.

IMDB Score: 7.2/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

Paint Your Wagon (1969)

In the old west, in a mining town, a stranger wheels into town, introducing his two wives. The reaction, "Good Lord! He's a Mormon." Well why should he have two wives when the men in town have none? It turns out that one of the wives is a handful so she goes on the auction block and is sold to a cantankerous old prospector (Lee Marvin).

That's alright, but she also falls in love with another town resident (Clint Eastwood) and asks why shouldn't she have two husbands if her ex can have two wives?

Well the town goes from sleepy to booming when the two prospectors hijack a stage and kidnap six women of the evening and setting up a saloon and brothel.

The music in this show goes from sentimental to rousing with the runaway hit being They Call the Wind Mariah.

IMDB Score: 6.7/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982)

The movie version of this hit album includes the music and both live action and animated segments that tell the story depicted in the album. We see a rock star falling into madness, scenes of a troubled youth, World War II and Nazism.

The music from the album is performed by Pink Floyd and isn't "live" which, I feel, ruins the songs.

The soundtrack includes too many hits to mention.

Note the IMDB score of 8/10, the mark of a stellar movie.

IMDB Score: 8.0/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

Sister Act (1992)

When a Vegas lounge singer (Whoopi Goldberg) witnesses a mob hit, she is spirited away by the police and put into hiding as a nun in a conservative convent. Here she, predictably, has trouble fitting in, until she is assigned to the all-nun choir. Here her singing background shines through and she organizes the (just plain awful) choir into a singing sensation.

Unfortunately this attracts the attention of the press and her cover may be blown.

I'm kind of a sucker for a musical, but this features some great covers of popular songs of the 50s done by choirs and re-arranged as tributes to God.

IMDB Score: 6.2/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

The Sound of Music (1965)

Part musical, part drama, this movie is great. I include it for completeness because, I mean really, who hasn't watched this film.

Maria (Julie Andrews) is a novitiate and having a tough time trying to become a nun.

When Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) comes to the convent looking for a governess, Maria is given the job. The children are resentful and give her a hard time, but she eventually wins them over and ends up falling in love with the Captain. But, the captain is already engaged to the baroness.

Again, this movie has too many hit songs to list. The soundtrack is again available and features the music of the film.

IMDB Score: 8.0/10
Amazon Score: 5.0/5

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Reviewed 10 May 2016

Another one included for completeness, The Wizard of Oz is a favorite.

You know the story... Dorothy (Judy Garland) runs away from home, wishes she could go "Over the Rainbow" and is caught in a tornado which deposits her in the land of Oz.

This is another who's who cast of the time and includes Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jake Haley and Margaret Hamilton.

No DVD collection is to be without this, well, favorite.

IMDB Score: 8.1/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5
