Comedy Television

3rd Rock from the Sun (1996-2001)

A team of aliens take human form to investigate a remote planet, Earth. They have no real concept of human life and bumble their way through day-to-day living.

The entire cast is excellent and the show is consistently funny.

IMDB Score 7.8/10
Amazon Score 4.6/5

The Big Bang Theory (2007+)

If you're an engineer or live with one, you're especially going to love this series.

Three twenty-something physicists (and a mechanical engineer that only got a Master's degree) have to deal with life and its realities despite how out-of-touch some of the characters actually are.

Enter Penny, the Cheesecake Factory waitress and neighbor across the hall. She's the object of unrequited love and wreaks havoc among the boys.

Sheldon is your genius without a clue, Howard is the Jewish mamma's boy, Rajesh is the fish out of water (and is paralyzed speechless in the presence of women, including Penny who always seems to be around) and so it's up to Leonard, the most socially adept genius in the bunch, to try and keep things together.

You know a show is good when other actors come out of the woodwork to do cameos, so watch for a few good ones.

This show is so good that I bought the T-shirt (Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock) and I'm tempted to pick up a second: Bazinga!.

There are eight seasons available so far.

Two and a Half Men (2003-2015)

I'm having a little trouble putting my finger on just why I love this series so much. I've always loved Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer is great as the brother, but I've always hated the boiler-plate cute fat boy character.

I think what makes this work is that the whole show has stepped out of the Hollywood/TV mold and delivers biting humor. This is by no means a kids show, the humor will be (should be) over their heads.

Charlie Harper (Sheen) is a happy-go-lucky womanizer (who writes TV jingles) and his brother Alan (Cryer) is a down-on-his-luck, OCD chiropractor (not a real doctor) who is recently divorced and has to stay with Charlie or be homeless. Alan's son Jake stays with part-time dad Alan on weekends where he learns all of the wrong things from his uncle Charlie.

The mother (grandmother to Jake) is a hoot, ex-wife Judith is the shrew we love to hate and housekeeper Berta is the woman we all hope our sons never meet.

The humor runs from dry to gutter and never fails to entertain (in an R-rated way).

After 8 seasons, Charlie Sheen got too much of an ego and was replaced by Ashton Kutcher. Usually this is the death of a series, but this change works.

All I can say is, try it, you'll like it.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988)

Have you ever gone to see a movie that turned out to be so bad that you just wanted to crack wise throughout the show?

That's exactly what Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) is. Trapped on a satellite above Earth, Joel Hodgson (later Michael J. Nelson) and a few robots are made to watch bad B movies. They watch the movies, all right, but they kibitz throughout the films.

The movies are as funny as the commentary (and to think I actually own some of the spoofed movies).

IMDB Score: 8.7/10
Amazon Score: 4.5/5

Red Dwarf (1988)

After three million years in suspended animation, Lister is revived aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf to find his only companions are a holographic version of his new roommate Lister and the evolved ship's cat.

This comedy is a send-up of space drama that pits Rimmer against boredom. He's the last human alive and goes from one disaster to another as he goes through deep space.

This show is part slapstick and part Brit-com and is the best comedy in years.

Red Dwarf ran for 8 season, came back as a mini-series titled Back to Earth and then had one last season. It is best to buy the 8 seasons together, then the 9th and 10th seasons if you find you like the show.

IMDB Score: 8.5/10
Amazon Score: 4.6/5
