FOTEP Magazine Reviews

Science Fiction / Fantasy Periodicals

Analog Magazine

This magazine is a bi-monthly publication.

Analog is a Science Fiction magazine that features mostly new-ish but otherwise published authors. It is a bit over 200 pages long and costs $21 for 6 months, $35 for a year and $64 for two years.

Each issue contains a serial, a novelette and 5 or so short stories. Each issue also contains several columns: Probability Zero (a short-short story), Science Fact (a factual feature on science), a poem or two, an editorial and book reviews.

Asimov's Science Fiction

This magazine is a bi-monthly publication.

Asimov's is a Science Fiction magazine that also features mostly new-ish but otherwise published authors. It is a bit over 200 pages long and costs $21 for 6 months, $35 for a year and $64 for two years.

Asimov's is published by the same people as Analog so there are a number of similarities between them.

Each issue contains a few novelettes and 5 or so short stories. Each issue also contains several columns: An editorial, Reflections (a short factual article), On the Net (a short article on a web site), book reviews and a convention calendar.

Fantasy & Science Fiction

This magazine is a bi-monthly publication.

F&SF is a Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine (oddly enough) that also features mostly new-ish but otherwise published authors. It is a bit over 250 pages long and costs $37 for a year and $60 for two years.

Each issue contains a novella, a few novelets and 5 or so short stories. Each issue also contains several columns: Two book review articles, an article on films, a word-play competition and an article called Curiosities (another book article).

This is the magazine I find myself reading most. I like the mix of stories.

Lightspeed Magazine

This magazine is a monthly ebook publication.

Lightspeed Magazine is a Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine that also features mostly new-ish but otherwise published authors. It is a bit over 425 pages long and costs $35.88 for a year and $71.76 for two years. They also have a lifetime subscription for $500 (which is 14 years of two-year subscriptions) so if you think the magazine is going to be around for a while... Also, you can buy bundles of 1 to 5 years' issues for $20 to $112. Individual (newer) issues are $3.99.

Each short story is released online, for free, throughout the month. This means that online you get everything but the novella, author spotlight and novel excerpt. Which, of course, means you're paying $2.99 to $3.99 for, basically, a novella.

Each recent issue contains 4 science fiction stories, 4 fantasy stories, an editorial, a movie review, book reviews, a novella, book excerpts and author spotlights.

I'm disappointed that this isn't published as a printed magazine, but otherwise it is a good deal if you read it offline.
