12 Angry Men (1957)

A classic in the Criterion Collection, 12 Angry Men sit in a jury room reviewing the evidence in a murder trial.  In the first vote, 11 men say the defendant is guilty and one man isn’t sure so votes not guilty.

The movie progresses by reviewing the evidence and talking it out until they can finally agree on a verdict.

I saw this as a play in a neighborhood high school.  It is still quite good.

984: Prisoner of the Future (1982)

Prisoner 984 doesn’t know why he was judged guilty and thrown into prison, yet the interrogations continue and he doesn’t know anything.  The Movement, however, keeps it up.

While I’m sure the producer thought this was a taught psychological thriller, I just found it dull.

This movie isn’t available as a standalone movie on anything but VHS, but it is in a collection of science fiction.  The focus is soft like it was taken from tape rather than a film.

Amazon Score 3.6/5

11:14 (2003)

In a somewhat convoluted tale, the lives of several people are told and their interrelationships are explored as their stories are told as events to each happen at 11:14 pm.

Just involved enough to hold your interest without being overly complex.  Not a bad movie, but lacks a real ending.

IMDB Score 7.2/10
Amazon Score 4.2/5

6 Degrees of Hell (2012)

Nominally starring Corey Feldman as a psychic investigator.  This is the story of 6 twenty-somethings plagued by an evil in town.

This is a bit low budget and marginal acting.  The ratings tell the story.

A guy collects occult objects and puts them into an old hotel that he made into a haunted house.  The problem is the actors get posessed and start killing the guests.

IMDB Score 2.6/10
Amazon Score 3.5/5

3 Women (1977)

Another highly-rated Criterion edition movie.  3 Women is about a couple of women that work in a California spa and their landlady.  The two spa workers are the bulk of the movie.

This is another art movie that really doesn’t warrant the high IMDB score.  I was disappointed.

IMDB Score 7.9/10
Amazon Score 4.1/5

3:10 to Yuma (1957)

What can I say, it’s a Western with an outlaw and a rancher.

Another of the Criterion collection, 3:10 to Yuma features a broke rancher that takes $200 to take an outlaw to the railroad in Contention and then to Yuma.

The movie is good, but is pretty standard Western fare.

IMDB Score 7.6/10
Amazon Score 4.9/5

3 Days to Kill (2014)

Kevin Costner was an agent, until he developed cancer.  Then he was retired.

Except he saw a bad guy in a previous op, and they need him just one more time.  All he has to do (and he’ll get an experimental cure) is find that man and kill him, and maybe a dozen others.

He is also trying to reconnect with his daughter before he dies.

A good action movie.
