Skin Game (2014)

Harry Dresden is back and he’s in trouble, again. Harry has three days to help his nemesis steal an object from Hades, in the underworld, from an impregnable vault or the parasite growing in his head will kill him without Mab’s help (after the job).

With the help of Karrin and a cast of supernatural “allies,” Harry has to do the impossible.

Jim Butcher has again found his stride and this is a fast-paced excellent book.

Goosebumps (2015)

This is another comedy horror movie without being a spoof like Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland.

Zach moves to Madison, Delaware with his mom, the new vice-principal of his high school. And if that’s not enough, they move next door to R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the Goosebumps books. They find that the creatures of the books really exist in this otherwise sleepy little town.

Zach, Hanna (Stine’s daughter) and Champ go on an adventure when Zach unintentionally releases the monsters from the books and they and Stine have to get them back into the books.

This movie lacks the comedy of most Jack Black movies but is still  decent adventure.

A Brilliant Young Mind (2014)

A Brilliant Young Mind

This movie was quite disappointing, I don’t know what I expected but I thought the movie had more potential.

This is the story of a functionally autistic young man who is a math prodigy and his “maths” instructor as they learn and grow as individuals. Nathan is competes to be a competitor in the International Mathematics Olympiad.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

Scouts Guide

Along the lines of Shaun of the Dead this zombie comedy pits three Scouts and a “cocktail waitress” from a strip club against a town full of zombies.

This film is just plain funny.

Ben, Carter and Augie discover that the town is turning zombie when their Scout leader, Scout Leader Rogers, has turned into a zombie. They are joined by Denise and try to save the lives of the seniors at a rave party before the town is bombed into oblivion by the military.

The Martian (2015)

The Martian

During a storm on the planet Mars, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left for dead when the rest of his team take off from the planet to escape the devastating storm.

In a curious mix of drama and comedy, this film delivers. Damon is great in the part and the suspense really earns the Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe win.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max Fury Road

This movie is shy on plot but big on action.

Max is captured and escapes with Imperator Furiosa and one of the former bad guys and head to a place that’s green and not desert as the rest of the area is.

I think that the Amazon score is nearer the mark. It’s a good film but probably not 8.2 out of 10.

Dragondrums (1979)

Piemur’s world has come to an end; the worst possible thing has happened: his voice is changing and he can’t sing in the Harperhall any more. What’s a harper apprentice to do?

Masterharper Robinton has a plan, while supposedly being apprenticed to the Drummaster, he’s really apprenticed to Robinton himself and will be assisting Menolly and Sebell, both Journeymen.

This is another great installment in the world of Pern; Piemur is one of my favorite characters.

Dragonsinger (1977)

Menolly has moved into the Harpercraft Hall and is now the apprentice of The Harper. But she has to win over some Masters that don’t feel that girls have a place in the craft and she has to deal with some spiteful and jealous Hold girls.

Will she make a good harper? Are her songs worth the effort? Can she and her 9 fire-lizards fit in in the Hall?

This is another world-building novel in the Pern series and is worth a read.

Jurassic World (2015)

Jurrasic World

22 years after the disaster that was Jurassic Park,  a new park, named Jurassic World is opened on the same island as the original. Everything goes fine until their new exhibit, a genetically engineered super-dinosaur, escapes confinement and goes on a killing spree in a park fully open to the public.

While essentially a re-telling of Jurassic Park, this movie holds your interest.
